Iran win an all-WABA clash for fifth place

Iran looking bitter yet from their ouster from the title race got some consolation beating fellow WABA team by a comprehensive margin 87-65 to take the fifth place.

Wuhan semifinal China’s most watched sport event this year

The FIBA Asia Championship semi-final game between China and Korea played last night peaked at 35 million viewers generating a reach of 81 million making it the highest rated sports programme on CCTV-5 in 2011. This beats the previous 2011 record set by Wuhan born, Li Na’s French Open Final which peaked at 34.54 million.

JPN/TPE - Japan take 7th place, coach Wisman leaves wishes unfulfilled

Japan kept a fighting Chinese Taipei at bay and posted a 81-72 win in the seventh place play-off in an improvement of their 10th place ranking two years ago. Taipei, who had finished 6th at Tianjin in 2009, finished two notches below.

Call it the David Vs. Goliath; call it red hot favorite hosts Vs. unfancied underdogs; call it by another analogy as you please. The Jordan Vs. China clash for the gold medal on Sunday – and the lone automatic qualifying spot for the London Olympics from FIBA Asia – is an encounter even the most clairvoyant among us wouldn’t have dared to bet on.

CHN/KOR - China breakaway in the second half in pursuit of FIBA Asia glory

China opened up the game right at the start of the second half, and then held fort to stop a feisty Korea in their tracks with a 56-43 verdict that put the hosts in their second successive – and 16th overall – appearance in a FIBA Asia Championship gold medal game.
